چکیده

Effective removal of mcroury conl”amindionborn water is a compl~x and difficult problcm. In patiicular, mercury treatment ornuluml waters is difficult because of the low regulatory w.amkirds. For exmnplc, MCEnvironnwntiil Protection Agency lMS established a natioml wnbitmt waler quality standwd of 12 pans-per-trillion (ppt), whereas the slandwd is 1.8 ppt in the Great LakGSJ Rugion. In addition, mercury is typically present in severul different forms, but sorption processes are rarely cffcctivc with mwc than one or two of these fumw. ‘~o meet the low regulakny discharge limits, a so~liun prucess must bc able to IKMressall forms of mcreury present iu the water. One approuch is toapply different sorbents in, series depending on the meruury speciation and the wgulatwy discharge limits,

Advances in encapsulation technologies for the management of mercury-contaminated hazardous wastes.

Although industrial and commercial uses of mercury have been curtailed in recent times, there is a demonstrated need for the development of reliable hazardous waste management techniques because of historic operations that have led to significant contamination and ongoing hazardous waste generation. This study was performed to evaluate whether the U.S. EPA could propose treatment and disposal a...

Thermal Treatment of Mercury Mine Wastes Using a Rotary Solar Kiln

Thermal desorption, by a rotary kiln of mercury contaminated soil and mine wastes, has been used in order to volatilize mercury from the contaminated medium. Solar thermal desorption is an innovative treatment that uses solar energy to increase the volatility of contaminants, which are removed from a solid matrix by a controlled air flow system. Samples of soils and mine wastes used in the expe...

Study on the Leaching of Mercuric Oxide with Thiosulfate Solutions

Mercury is receiving more concern due to its high mobility and high toxicity to human health and the environment. Restrictive legislations and world-wide efforts have been made on mercury control, especially the release and disposal of mercury-contaminated wastes. This paper describes a novel technology for detoxifying mercury-containing solid wastes with thiosulfate salts. Various parameters w...

Potential for energy recovery from municipal plastic wastes generated in Nigeria

Management of municipal solid wastes (MSW) in most developed societies now involves the use of thermo-chemical conversion methods. This leads to energy and material recovery while also protecting the environment. However, till date most of the wastes generated in Nigeria (including plastic wastes) are either land-filled or openly burnt. These methods are not sustainable and environmentally non-...

Mercury pollution in Wuchuan mercury mining area, Guizhou, Southwestern China: the impacts from large scale and artisanal mercury mining.

To evaluate the environmental impacts from large scale mercury mining (LSMM) and artisanal mercury mining (AMM), total mercury (THg) and methyl mercury (MeHg) were determined in mine waste, ambient air, stream water and soil samples collected from Wuchuan mercury (Hg) mining area, Guizhou, Southwestern China. Mine wastes from both LSMM and AMM contained high THg concentrations, which are import...
